Investing in the American energy renaissance
Every once in a while, you see something you’ve never seen before, such as a spiny bandicoot or a Canadian militant. But here’s something you really haven’t seen before: A period of seething Middle Eastern unrest — and falling energy prices.
Madera Pacific Ethanol plant lands sweet neighbor
It’s better times for California’s ethanol producers, with investment dollars flowing into technology to make production plants more efficient and diverse in the feedstocks they accept.
“We are just about there,” said Paul Koehler, spokesman for Sacramento-based Pacific Ethanol, referring to the long-time effort to begin making ethanol from farm waste and nonfood feedstock instead of corn
2014 BMW i3 REx Vs Chevy Volt: Range-Extended Electric Cars Compared
[Blog] Until recently, the Chevy Volt was the only range-extended electric car available in the U.S. I’ve driven a Volt for almost three years now, and it’s been a splendid car–quiet, smooth, peppy, and amazingly economical
Biodiesel an advanced biofuel that cuts reliance on petroleum
The Chicago Tribune editorial “Repeal renewable fuel standard,” (Aug. 6) was undoubtedly off the mark when it claimed the Renewable Fuel Standard had “flopped” at encouraging the development of advanced biofuels in the United States.
U.S. Looks to Lift Weight Limits for Natural Gas Trucks
The U.S. House and Senate have bills that would raise federal truck weight limits for natural gas vehicles. Heavier fuel tanks and equipment on natural gas trucks can add as much as 2,000 pounds more than diesel trucks, putting these trucks at a competitive disadvantage. “Legislation such as this will help accelerate the growth of the Natural Gas vehicle market and provide [the U.S.] with the environmental benefits and greater energy independence that comes with using clean domestic natural gas as a vehicle fuel,” said Rich Kolodziej, president of NGVAmerica.

New process helps overcome obstacles to produce renewable fuels and chemicals
There’s an old saying in the biofuels industry: “You can make anything from lignin except money.” But now, a new study may pave the way to challenging that adage. The study from the Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) demonstrates a concept that provides opportunities for the successful conversion of lignin into a variety of renewable fuels, chemicals, and materials for a sustainable energy economy.
Turning Waste Coffee Grounds Into A Different Kind Of Fuel: Powering Your Car
When people talk about waste at a coffee shop, they tend to fixate on the massive pile of disposable cups that ends up in landfills. But the average coffee shop also throws out around 22 pounds of coffee grounds a day; in a city like London, that adds up to around 200,000 tons a year. Now, a new startup plans to start turning that waste into fuel for cars and energy to heat local homes.
NRDC report helps guide major fuel buyers to sustainable biofuels procurement
The report “Biofuel Sustainability Performance Guidelines,” was commissioned by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and authored by LMI, a not-for-profit government consultancy. It comes as large fuel consumers begin to pivot toward more plant-based fuel options to boost their “green” credentials and sustainability efforts while reducing their use of fossil fuels. The report is intended to help guide fuel buyers such as federal, state and municipal bulk fuel procurement officers, contractors and suppliers, and corporate sustainability officers.
